Round 1 – Russell Vale FC vs Bulli Masters

Russell Vale FC travelled to Balls Paddock for the second week in a row, this week to face Bulli Masters in the deferred round 1 match, a game that could define the season. As Bulli’s Premier League side also due to play at Balls Paddock that day, it was decided that the over 35’s game would be the showpiece event and kick-off at 4.30pm. As it turns out, the evening was a little brisk.

Despite the Antarctic weather, or maybe because of it, FC came out of the blocks quickly (it might also have something to do with the fact that Bulli started with 10 men, but I like the other explanation better). Within 10 minutes FC were ahead after a corner, which was originally cleared by Bulli fell to an FC player outside the box. The ball was quickly swept back out to the corner flag, and was duly put back into the mixer again. The ball fell to Aaron who made no mistake with the finish, 1-0.

More good work from FC followed the early goal, with Bulli restricted to playing on the break. But despite a couple of chances the score remained at 1-0 until Damo made another good run onto the ball and into the box before finishing nicely for 2-0.

That spurred Bulli into action and a couple of raids had FC scrambling defensively, but managing to survive. Until a long ball saw the FC defence out of position, and the finish was taken nicely by the Bulli player. 2-1 at half time.

In the second half, FC appeared to forget how to playwith the ball more often than not being misplaced.  Bulli had the bulk of the possession and were looking for the equaliser. FC were resolute in defence though, and despite some close calls were able to keep Bulli at bay. Relief was had when Mikey latched onto a through ball and absolutely walloped the ball into the back of the net. The final result was 3-1, a result that leaves FC 3 points from top spot, albeit having played one game less than Bulli and Port Kembla.
