Following closely behind was Hollers and Matt Smart.

RVALE UTD VS OAK FLATS FLAME ROUND 13.

RESULT: RV UTD 3-2 WIN OVER THE FLAME.

Saturdays game was unusual for the boys.  A 3pm start??? What the hell. We went south for winter to Oak Flats where the familiar cross paddock wind was blowing. We were without Hollers Bottsa Chippy Craig and Chris Page and the Oak Flats  boys were about doing drills from 2.15pm.  upon our arrival . KEEN.

We started a little slow with Oak Flats bagging a goal from a right side run early in the piece. WE then started to work ourselves into the game with a few chances. They were quick onto the ball and like pumping it long for the fast guys. Later in the 1st half a quick throw in to Snowy who crossed the ball into Phil who held it, composed, passed the ball to the left side of the net for a 1-1 score.

Second half we had their measure and weren’t too threatened at all.  Jez received a push in the back in the box and we were awarded a pen. Cabbasi found the net to give us a 2-1 lead. UTD then controlled the game from that point with good passing. 20 min out Andy 45 out put a high long ball up to challenge the keeper, and it drifted in over his head for a 3-1 lead.

Soon after we were defending when a shot was slammed towards the goal, hitting Cabass in the chest. His hand was part of his chest and the ref awarded a pen to them which they converted. A harsh call for UTD. 3-2.

We played out wide pushing the ball to their 18 yard line. A long ball to the box was attempted by Snowy, Jim contesting and subsequently studded on the thigh by the grub of a keeper. Intentional, but the ref gave a yellow and an indirect free kick. The set piece was blocked, a left stab at goal kicked off the line by their defence and soon after we had a win.

GO UTD.

Round 12 Russell Vale United v’s Thirroul

UTD turned up with 13 men to take on Thirroul Saturday afternoon at 1pm at Thirroul.  The Thirroul lads were after their first win of the season but we were intent to keep affixed at the top of the comp.

We started well and controlled the ball for most of the game. The second field is very skinny compared to Cawley Park but this wasn’t too much of an issue against the young lads.

Chippy started with a through ball and ran into space to chip the keeper to open the ledger. Midway through the first half Chippy went for a header, made contact but received a small push in the back in the BOX so Tony Cabassi found the net for 2-0.

Late in the second half Phil fed  to a ball to Hollers who made a run into the left side of the box, slid a ball across the face and Rosey converted nicely. 3-0 half time.

In the second half the game pretty much stayed the same level. UTD kept pushing, with many opportunities. Botts found the net with a 12 yard strike after the ball came back out of the box to make it 4-0. 10 in later, Jim pushed a ball through to Cabass who ran into the box on the right, pushed a ball across to find Andy and the back of the net for 5-0. That’s the way it stayed, another good win for UTD.

Jim.

World Cup Tipping – Second Round

Well, the group matches are now done and it’s on to the second round. After the group stages, Rowdy is in the lead but Andy and Matt Smart are hot on his heels.

The next set of fixtures is now up, and as knockout games you have the added difficulty of trying to predict the winner if there’s a penalty shootout.

Rules (again)

  •  10. For example predict 3-0 and the result is 3-0 award 10 points
This includes the penalties in the knockout stage if applicable

  •   4. For example predict 2-2 and the result is 1-1 award 4 points

  •   4. For example predict 1-0 and the result is 2-0 award 4 points
This includes the penalties in the knockout stage if applicable

Round 10 – Russell Vale FC v Bulli FC

FC were facing Bulli FC in a game that, if won, could see FC top the table for the first time since round 3. But Bulli, who were already top, are always a tough opponent and seem to grow tougher when facing Russell Vale.

The game started of slowly with FC uncharacteristically sluggish and the passes just weren’t hitting their mark as they have done in previous rounds. Despite that, FC got on the score sheet first at around the 15 minute mark with a Bulli clearance falling to Neil about 20 yards out. The ball was hit sweetly and nestled into the back of the net for 1-0.

An early lead is always nice, but Bulli were playing well and had a couple of opportunities to equalise, including two shots that hit the post. FC also had a couple of good opportunities to score but were unable to make them count. A stone cold penalty should have been given after a Bulli player pushed Damo out of the way of a great cross with the Keeper in no-mans land, but it wasn’t to be.

At the 40 minute mark, a handball in the box saw FC awarded a penalty. Chappo stepped up and with a well taken penalty scored what should have been the goal to take the score to 2-0. Unfortunately, despite the referee blowing the whistle to signify game on, the penalty was required to be retaken due to dissent from a Bulli player leading to a yellow card. The resultant attempt saw the ball cannon off the post and out – no goal, and the best yellow card that Bulli player will probably ever receive.

One nil at half time, and FC knew improvement was required if they wanted to win against a Bulli side that were there to compete.

The teams came out for the second half and it was Bulli who scored first from a penalty. While the penalty was debatable, with the FC player clearly winning the ball before any contact was made, what was not debatable was the finish, 1-1 and unfortunately no Russell Vale players were booked for dissent requiring a retake.

Bull then took the lead after FC lost possession 30 yards from goal and the ball was smashed into the back of the net. A nice goal…..

That stung FC into action and from that point on they had the majority of possession looking for an equaliser. A number of chances came and went, before Borce got himself lost and found himself high up the field in the opposition half. A great pass down the line to Aaron saw him in space before turning inside and hitting a low shot into the far corner of the net. In off the post, and it was 2-2.

FC continued to look for the winner, but were unable to prise open the Bulli defence a third time. The game ended 2-2 against a very competitive Bulli side. We’ll get them next round.

Round 10 – Russell Vale United v Puckamia Bay Dugongs

While the FC boys face a double header this weekend due to the State Cup match, United were able to move their game against Puckamia Bay Dugongs to Wednesday night under lights at Cawley Park.

As is usual with night games, the ground was a little dewey at kickoff meaning the ball would skid a lot more off the turf causing difficulties for both sides, and especially the keepers. United started the game intent on actually scoring a goal in the first half for the first time this season, and came out firing. A number of chances fell their way but weren’t taken, until about the 20th minute when they were successful in scoring. Or, more correctly, Puckamia were successful in scoring an own goal. Chippy tried to claim it, but the other United players were having none of it. Still, they were one-nil up in the first half, so goal achieved.

The second goal arrived shortly thereafter, with Tony picking the ball up at sweeper and meandering through the entire Puckamia Bay team, into the box and tucked the ball away. A great goal, inadequately recounted.

A dam had broken, and Russell Vale were looking for more goals. They were duly rewarded when a flowing passing move saw the ball passed in from the right for Snowy to put past the keeper. 3-0 and that’s how the teams went into half time.

The second half was fairly uneventful compared to the first half, with United taking their foot off the pedal, and playing the game out. The only notable action was Puckamia Bay scoring about 25 minutes into the half.

The game finished 3-1, United had broken their drought by scoring in the first half of the game, and there were no injuries. A great result all round.

Bring on the State Cup.
